Be Red Cross Ready
Get A Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.

Be Red Cross Ready provides an opportunity to package together a wide array of actions to better assist the public with preparing for emergencies and disasters. The American Red Cross is working with the Department of Homeland Security to offer a single, consistent, primary message for use by all emergency responding agencies.

This alignment of information allows us to have one national public preparedness messages.   Be Red Cross Ready will offer guiles that will detail why It’s important that all of us be prepared for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural or human-caused disasters can strike suddenly, at anytime and anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that will help make a difference…

Get a Kit
During a disaster, people will need to have supplies on hand to help them cope and respond. The objective of Get a Kit is to get people to gather the necessary supplies they will need if their daily routine is disrupted. The supplies include things that people need everyday –– not just during a disaster –– such as food, water, clothes, medicines and medical items. The kit is the most specific of the three options with a detailed list of suggested items.

Make a Plan
People should determine before a disaster, what their actions will be should a disaster occur. Thinking ahead makes it easier to make decisions in a potential stressful time and know what to do if separated from others in the household. The objective of Make a Plan is to get people to think through their options and actions before a disaster occurs, write these plans down and share them with others they care about. Make a Plan can be broadened to encourage neighbors to share their plans, and encourage people to get involved with organizations that plan for, respond to, or recover from disasters — such as the Red Cross — an important aspect of making certain that these plans work and have the needed resources.

Be Informed
Information, and the application of it, is key to encouraging and reinforcing positive behavior change. The objective of Be Informed is to get people to learn about disasters, as well as to acquire the skills necessary to help them during a disaster. When starting to prepare for disasters, Be Informed is awareness raising and information gathering so people are better informed as to how they should prepare and what they can expect from emergency services during a disaster. During and after a disaster, Be Informed can be used to emphasize the importance of getting local information and, such as local services, location of shelters and first aid and CPR training.
